[...] The receipt had been filed with images and papers having to do with the Hills, my maternal grandfather’s family. They were hard working folks of modest means who lived in Dry Pond, so I could not figure the connection.
04/24/2013

I do indeed remember Faircloths' Oyster Roast My family went there often for a big oyster dinner, including sometimes a bushel or other times a peck, depending on the number people at the table. My grandfather, Walter Stokley, owned a seafood market, dock, and boat rental business just down the road. Granddaddy also owned two shrimp trawlers, and he and Mr. Faircloth sometimes competed for the biggest catch.

Rose Lila Norton Ruth Roberta RosaBelle Nixon , last child of Ruth Lane Nixon and Robert Nixon was delivered at James Walker memorial Hospital c. April 13, 1940. Noteworthy was the fact that this child was the only Nixon baby born in hospital. All others born on 11th and Princess Streets, the family "homestead'", and delivered by a midwife . The pavilion for African Americans was a major contribution to healthcare for blacks who had no access to hospitals in Wilmington NC prior to construction of the "causeway" that adjoined the two buildings. Rose's unusually lengthy name includes that of Lila Norton,a kindly white nurse who assisted my grandmother in her delivery of her tenth child.
